Research Lines

The research developed in the Postgraduate Program in Biological Sciences, Area of concentration in Cellular and Molecular Biology (PBC), is organized in research lines. The Program offers research opportunities along the following lines:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIOCHEMISTRY AND GENETICS OF MICRORGANISMS

Biochemical studies of different species of microorganisms. Selection of producing species and production of enzymes of biotechnological interest. Molecular identification of microorganisms. Parasexuality, developmental genetics and gene regulation in filamentous fungi. Action studies of biologically active natural and synthetic products on microorganisms

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STRUCTURAL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Studies of morphology, histology, ultrastructure and gene expression in vertebrates and invertebrates. Structural and functional analysis of curved DNA segments and repair proteins involved in eukaryotic replication origins. Cytogenetic characterization with emphasis on the evolutionary aspects of different fish species in the Paraná basin.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PLANT BIOCHEMISTRY AND GENETICS

Evaluation of biochemical and physiological effects caused by secondary compounds in roots. Study of biological oxidation in isolated mitochondria. Cytogenetic characterization of meiotic events. Studies of mineral nutrition and homeopathy. Rational design of bio-friendly agrochemicals for weed control, promotion of saccharification of lignocellulosic biomass and mechanical resistance of different plant organs. Nanotoxicity and controlled release. Role of the cell wall in defense against saline stress, heavy metals, pathogens and nitrogen use efficiency. In vivo and in vitro pretreatments aimed at increasing the efficiency of biofuel production (2G ethanol). Hormonal control of plant development.

 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

METABOLISM, BIOENERGY AND CELL PHYSIOLOGY

Study of hepatic metabolism: characterization of cell heterogeneity; drug action; and study of biological oxidations in isolated mitochondria. Investigation of the pharmacological activity of extracts and substances isolated from medicinal plants or natural products on cellular metabolism. Studies of the action of substances on neuromuscular transmission and blood pressure. Studies of insulin secretion by beta-pancreatic cells in experimental animal models of diabetes and obesity.
